GWI Sponsors Mid-Atlantic Bio October 22-24 | The Mid-Atlantic Venture Association, the Virginia Biotechnology Association, and the Tech Council of Maryland/MdBio co-hosted this annual substantive, regional bioscience industry conference. Over three days in October, conference attendees heard from biotech industry leaders about innovations and advances in life sciences. Investors had an opportunity to learn in depth about the initiatives of individual bioscience companies and research organizations, while exhibitors had a chance to showcase their capabilities and offerings to industry stakeholders.  The Greater Washington Initiative sponsored the Closing Luncheon, which featured a keynote address by Andrew C. von Eschenbach, M.D., Commissioner of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Next year's Mid-Atlantic Bio will take place at the Washington Convention Center in Washington, DC November 4-6, 2009.

Area Companies Dominate Inc. 500 List of
Fastest-Growing Companies Once Again
| For the twelfth consecutive year, the Greater Washington region has the largest number of fastest-growing private companies in America, according to Inc. Magazine. This year, the region had 45 area companies on the 2008 Inc. 500 list. New York is second, with 31, followed by Atlanta with 29 companies, Chicago at 27 companies, and Los Angeles with 26. Greater Washington Ranks #2 in Median Household Income:10 Counties in Top 20 Nationally | Greater Washington’s median household income ($83,200) is 64% above the national average ($50,740) and up from $79,500 just one year ago.  If San Jose (which ranked 1st) and San Francisco (which ranked 3rd) were combined into one metropolitan area that compared more closely in population, Greater Washington would rank first nationally. 2008 Regional Report Now Available | The Greater Washington Initiative's annual signature publication that showcases Greater Washington's strengths and compares the region's economy and quality of life to other major metro areas was released June 4 at GWI's Annual Meeting. GWI Names Matt Erskine as Executive Director | The Greater Washington Board of Trade has hired Matt Erskine as the new executive director of the Greater Washington Initiative. Erskine assumed his new role on July 7. He formerly held the position of deputy secretary of commerce and trade from 2002 to 2005 under Virginia Governor Mark Warner.  Before coming to the Board of Trade, he was the president of PLAY, a management consulting firm in Richmond, Virginia.  He has also worked in Washington D.C. for several years in positions at Korn/Ferry International and Coopers & Lybrand Consulting (now IBM Business Consulting).
